Well, Dan, I have seen many things called religious intolerance. But none of them have ever had to do with someone explaining why he believes in his religion. Usually, it's an example of someone trying to get his religion passed into law. Also the only occassion I have had to be upset with someone "quietly reading his bible" was in regards to one fellow who liked to occupy the only restroom stall in the building for thirty minutes at a time to do it. Furthermore, it wasn't until afterward that I found out what he was doing other than keeping people from using the restroom. All in all, I would say that nihil is what that has going toward a valid description.
For more proof, look at The "Amazing" Atheist, Cult of Dusty and even Richard Dawkins himself for examples of atheists who all use these derogatory phrases and are insulting towards religious people as if that helps their position.
Wow. And I'll bet you don't even see the irony in pasting that cartoon onto a blog called "Debunking Atheists" (that might be the funniest part, really).
Weirdly, in the Religious Right's insistence that they're an abused minority (despite being a distinct majority), they project like mad: I've personally never seen a Christian metaphorically mugged by an aggressive atheist, but I've seen (and been on the receiving end) of the inverse of that multiple times.
Of course, they're also hypersensitive to any perceived anti-Christian bias, so anything that doesn't actually "proclaim the glory of god" is seen as a slight. (No, really: Romans 14:23 (NIV) - "everything that does not come from faith is sin.")
"Actually it is I believe, the cartoon is quite 'Amazing'" You know what might have been more persuasive? A link to something actually done by one of christianity's critics. After all, if you think that the actions of "amazingatheist" support your claims, a link to one of his own videos should support it. But his actual actions (going into a group consisting only of supporters, engaging in vulgar humor, and using dubbed clips of the most irrational representatives of christianity while pretending it is the best christianity has to offer) is not the same as seeking christians out and engaging them face-to-face.

Walking in the city, Saturday morning I walked past a guy standing on a box, yelling about Jesus, literally waving a Bible. While composing a text, a man shoved a tract into my hands with the title "You could have ten seconds to live", after a short "conversation" in which he interrupted everything I said, he told me that me "can't wait for Judgment Day so he could see me burning in Hell" and that I'd "remember this for all eternity". After shopping, I walked home past a "Hell is real" billboard.
So the idea that neck-bearded, over-weight rat-like atheists are oppressing the poor poor Christians is laughable propaganda at best.
>>I've personally never seen a Christian metaphorically mugged by an aggressive atheist,
You have not been here long enough then. Keep reading and seeking.
>>Of course, they're also hypersensitive to any perceived anti-Christian bias, so anything that doesn't actually "proclaim the glory of god" is seen as a slight.
Certainly not any atheists though, they are perrrrrfect. We can see that your blinders are a perrrrrfect fit.
>>The "atheist" is a predator, and the "christian" is prey. You expect them to walk offstage hand-in-hand?
Yes, someday. Hope you will be there to see it. (Isaiah 11:6)
So do you view a short "conversation" and a "Hell is real" billboard as hateful?
Just wondering how you feel as to what love is.
Is love pulling a child out a building that is burning even though he is kicking and screaming that he wants to continue to play in that burning building? We may get bruised but its worth it.
Now this is just me but I believe love (perfect love) is a constant confronter, it takes far more love to confront then to ignore the situation. Do you agree?
Granted, some do it with a gentler touch but I am happy that Christ is preached either way. (Philippians 1:15-18)
Sometimes truth is confrontational, I understand. Please do not take offense. I know me all to well and sometimes I am aggressive attempting to pull you out of the fire while you are kicking and screaming but when we are "in the clear" we can both calm down and lick our wounds. Right now its an emergency, forgive me if I bruise you a little in grabbing you. Now get your butt out of that fire!!!

Hmm. So if the atheist portrayed in the comic genuinely believed the Christian was living a miserable life in fear of punishment that doesn't exist, wouldn't what he did be loving?
I wish I could say that the comic is completely fictional, but it's not like I haven't seen atheists say some pretty rude things to theists. Happens all the time. Never seen any grab Christians on the street and pour their drinks on a Bible, but something like that has probably happened, somewhere. But pretending that the atheist is an average member of this "New atheism" is nothing but Christian propaganda, and so is the conclusion of the comic. I get it's a comic and it's exaggerated for comedy, but it doesn't make sense. How is explaining your religious beliefs to someone intolerance? Has anyone ever made that claim?
I'll tell you what religious intolerance is. It's forcing the religious beliefs of the majority into the country's pledge of allegiance, which should encompass all of the nation's citizens as equals. It's telling two people who are in love that they can't marry, again because of the religious beliefs of the majority. It's making sure that no one who is not part of this religious majority can't run for public office without faking it. It's making kids pray in school. It's the demonizing of anyone who doesn't belong to the religious majority, saying they're immoral etc.

ReplyDeleteAll in all, I would say that nihil is what that has going toward a valid description.
Yeah, the cartoon would be funny if it had any basis in fact. Even an exagerrated one.
ReplyDeleteOne the plus side, the artistry was good, though I wonder about his usage of animals.
Then again, I'm always wondering about the religious rightwingers usage of animals...

DeletePeter Singer (a notable atheist philosopher) down-right says it's okay for human and animal relationships...

So you should be more concerned for all these atheist philosophers from the past few decades who are suspiciously single...now we might know why.
And yes the cartoon does have basis in fact. Just look at the internet atheists including the ones here in the comments themselves.
For more proof, look at The "Amazing" Atheist, Cult of Dusty and even Richard Dawkins himself for examples of atheists who all use these derogatory phrases and are insulting towards religious people as if that helps their position.
DeleteI realise it's supposed to be humour, but it's a little ... I dunno ... pot calling the kettle black?
ReplyDeleteReynold,
ReplyDelete>>Yeah, the cartoon would be funny if it had any basis in fact. Even an exagerrated one.
Actually it is I believe, the cartoon is quite "Amazing"
The last two frames- I don't get it.....
ReplyDeleteHe sticks his hand in his shirt and it turns human? WTF????????

You know, of course, that context is being ignored here.
ReplyDeleteOf course they aren't getting along. The "atheist" is a predator, and the "christian" is prey. You expect them to walk offstage hand-in-hand?

Even Penn was appreciative of the Good news.
Maybe someday you will be also. We love you, that is why.
Dan,
ReplyDeleteSo meanwhile, you're expecting the bear to be calm and quiet? When you can't even stop them from killing busloads of children? (2 Kings 2:24)
Oh, and why are you assuming an atheist is automatically the criminal on an unsolved case involving media attention? Again, hypersensitive much?
Now this is just me but I believe love (perfect love) is a constant confronter, it takes far more love to confront then to ignore the situation.
ReplyDeleteWait... so what the fictional atheist did in the comic was loving now?
Dan
ReplyDeleteCertainly not any atheists though, they are perrrrrfect.
Where did any of us claim that we were?
Just as there are jerkwad theists, there are jerkwad atheists.
We can see that your blinders are a perrrrrfect fit.
I'd advise you to take them off; you're making false statements about what atheists believe again. (that we believe that we're perfect)

So... Yeah. What a dumb comic. :P
I think that a more accurate representation of that last frame can be found here.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant straw-man.
DeleteThe comic isn't claiming Christians are oppressed, only that there are atheists who act like this.
That made no sense whatsoever. Another example of making up the evidence in your head, rather than observing the real world.
ReplyDeleteAren't you proving the comic true? You're even using similar phrases and claiming the intellectual high ground when you don't have one.

You need to replace your satire-detection kit. It's not working.
Might’ve been punnier to depict the bullying, Chickesque atheist in this strip as a gnu, rather than a mouse.
