God Particle, Revisited

Many years ago, I posted about and discussed, the God particle. Well, maybe we get to revisit the subject this week.

5 sigma for the God particle? (5 means new discovery or highly confident) This is what they are calling the "holy grail of particle physics," over at CERN. They spent 10 billion to build it just to find the Higgs Boson, after all. Find out on the 4th

Update: Well, Papa Giorgio provided us with the explanation of what all this means from Dr. William Lane Craig

  1. At least the scientists know what elements are on the periodic table and you, apparently do not.

    1. I had to take some creative license to achieve the goal. I still thought it was a good idea. The elements spelling "DeAtH" was a bonus. :7)

    2. BTW, the element "De" is called Delirium. The Atheists are quite familiar with it. :7)

    3. It is a good idea, since Christianity is a fucking death cult.

    4. I forgot to add that Jesse's favorite element was "wire"

Walt: "...and what shall we use to conduct this beautiful current with, hmm? What one particular element comes to mind, hmm? hmmm?

      Jesse: "Aaaaah wire!"

Walt: disappointed look "eh... copper, it's copper"

      Great scene

  3. I have to congratulate you, you're the most funny thing i read on the web today. At first i thought you were sarcastic, but you actually believe in all this. You actually believe that atheists are a threat to mankind !!!!

As a (decadent ofc) european i can't begin to fathom unbelievably delusional minds like yours, and can only be puzzled why you need to do this in, as you live in a culture where less than 4% of the population admit to be atheist (you probabky know we're nearly 50% in Europe - which foretells of a righteous godly annihilation of gomorran scale after all this debauchery - can't wait to see it), but you gave me a good laugh.

I'll be visiting your blog, everyone can use a laugh now and then, plus you try to avoid hate language (like 'let's kill all them atheists with machetes' 'help god smite these unfaithful', 'may they burn in hell forever') which is good.

Hope you'll be discussing such important topics as transsubstanciation or the trinitary nature of god.

    Kudos !

    1. Atheists are a threat to mankind? Hardly, Christ is in charge after all. I am here only out of concern for you.

  4. The death this blog seeks to achieve is of world views like yours. You're a walking-talking advertisement for atheism

  5. Hey Dan,

I have read some of your blog - and some of your comment threads and I believe I have some understanding of your beliefs and the strength of your convictions.

I think you are doing a fantastic thing in attempting to rationalise your beliefs. Please forgive me if I appear condescending or patronising in any way, I am quite sincere. I have nothing but respect for a theist who is looking to solidify their beliefs in logic.

Any rationalists at all that may be reading this, regardless of whether they choose to identify as 'atheist', will know exactly where the pursuit of debate and open discourse leads.

Keep it up, Dan. I hope you find the gifts of knowledge that this blog has the power to provide, even if they are not the ones you are strictly seeking.

    All the best,

I think I understand where you're coming from, Dom. One thing which may not be apparent at Dan's blog is the length of time he's been making these same arguments.

No one seeking information, understanding or enlightenment would ever allow their ideas to remain unchanged. The process requires modification of the ideas according to the information uncovered.

Dan's ideas haven't changed. At all. His personality, however, has become more pig-headed and arrogant over the last 5 years.

Dan's no seeker. He's a bitter theist seeking to ignore the contradictions in his world view.

    2. One could argue that the arrogance is a manifestation of the increasing defensiveness he must feel as his positions become less tenable and the strength of the arguments he encounters mounts. I'm speaking purely at a subconscious level; I'm sure he would argue that his convictions are stronger than ever.

Arrogance is not strictly the problem, I know plenty of arrogant (and bitter!) atheists and I do admire their passion. They will not stand for a second of, as they would so elegantly describe, 'the fairy myth horseshit' of unsubstantiated faith. I'm quite the opposite, I have plenty of time and sympathy for theists and will always ask them questions in a way that doesn't make them feel uncomfortable but also asks them to consider their faith from a slightly different angle. Ultimately however, nobody will out-arrogance a well-read atheist, and rightly so. Through arrogance, Dan is bringing the fight to a place that is very well trod by non-believer shoes.

The idea that he will try and tackle Higgs in an article alone means that to some extent he will be immersed into a whole world of scientific method. The idea that he is presenting Christianity as *compatible* with physics requires he hold a certain respect for the importance of the scientific discipline or at least its methodologies. I believe that the respect of this process is the primary fuel that powers the evaluation of belief and the more he is exposed to this the better.

Whether he remains a Christian into old age is not the issue, our generation's indoctrinations are ours to bear and ours to rewire with only a lifetime of consideration and research. The exposure that I describe is not for his benefit directly, rather for the benefit of his children and his children's children through him as his insistences weaken.

Those descendants will of course have their own indoctrinations to tackle, but they will be altogether new ones: free from the inertia of the fights already won by a thousand generations of rationalists' often unpopular work.

    3. That was a great thoughtful reply, Dom. Thanks!

Personally speaking, I wouldn't characterize all theists the way I characterize Dan. I think it's possible to be sincere and honest while believing in a deity.

You are indeed a master at that, especially your 'creative logic.'

    Heehee.

  7. An ridiculously huge site header, so people need to scroll down a ton just to read any of the posts. What a horrible site design.

    1. No, the comment threads, especially the ones over 200+ comments, forces the scroll down. If the picture discourages you, the comments themselves will be overwhelming so you are in the wrong place to have a discussion in the first place. That being said, I cannot see me looking at my own mug for too long, so it will be changing shortly. Patience is a virtue, after all.

  8. Here is an embeddable audio of Dr, William Lane Craig explaining the Higgs Boson particle:

Keep in mind that for some reason with the audio uploads from MRCTV the best embed code is the "object" code. Not the iFrame ("iFrame" works in the videos as well as the "object").
