The Bible, Bunch of Fairy Tales
Oh, how many time have I heard from Atheists that the Bible is just a bunch of Fairy Tales...
“Have you ever heard of anyone in history being imprisoned or executed for distributing copies of Grimm’s fairy tales? What would you say if you’d heard that copies of The Iliad and The Odyssey had been banned in Saudi Arabia and North Korea? Imagine people trying to smuggle copies of Hans Christian Andersen’s works into China? Such ideas are comical, but the Bible, which has been called a mere collection of myths and fairy tales, has suffered all of these fates. Throughout history and even today, copies of the Bible are banned and burned, and those possessing it are persecuted and imprisoned. There’s something about this ancient book that threatens and frightens those in power, especially those who use power to oppress people weaker than themselves. And they have every reason to be frightened.”
Eric Metaxas, Everything You Always Wanted to Know about God (Colorado Springs, 2005), page 155.

So, basically a mixture of 'some people don't like it so it must be true' and argumentum ad populum...
ReplyDeleteAnd yet again, Rhiggs misses the mark and falsely cries fallacy.
ReplyDeleteDo explain...
ReplyDeletehttp://xrl.in/5d0c
ReplyDeleteEverybody used to think the world was flat. that doesn't stop the world being round.
ReplyDeleteOr going by your reasoning a lot of people are willing to kill themselves for Allah so it must be more true than Christianity.
Or on the otherhand the Christian and Muslem Fundies are trying to ban Evolution and so it must be true.
That's why I put my trust in reality being the best model that fits the data. If you have a better model then show it.
Dan,
ReplyDeleteIn reference to the Site you wrote about last week, Bio-Complexity, now has every evidence for a creator on the site.
Just in case anyone cares, here's a bible site I just found.
ReplyDeleteLet me know if it's any good or not. I've just skimmed through it so far.
Now, about Dan's comment about no one kills anyone for fairtytales, then by that logic, the Koran must not be fairytales either since a lot of people have died for that book as well. (and killed for that book, as with the bible)
Dan...
ReplyDeleteThe bible is basically a bunch of fairy tales. The reason people are being imprisoned and executed is quite obvious.
One shouldn't allow fairy tales to rule their lives. Look what it has done to Limp Storm Biscuit.
Rhiggs,
ReplyDelete>>Do explain...
Self explanatory. "There’s something about this ancient book that threatens and frightens those in power, especially those who use power to oppress people weaker than themselves. And they have every reason to be frightened."
The Bible is anything but a bunch of fairy tales, it is a real threat to evil men, like yourself. The Bible is not taken, as flippantly claimed by atheists, as a "bunch of fairy tales." Again, the Bible is TAKEN REAL SERIOUSLY, it is not taken as a bunch of fake stories as falsely claimed by the atheists. Get it? In other words, the atheist have been debunked and proven wrong...yet again. Clearer, or do I need to repeat it? I sure thought you were less in denial, and less defensive, then that but I guess that is to be expected.
What is a Limp Storm Biscuit?
ReplyDeleteReynold,
ReplyDelete>>Just in case anyone cares, here's a bible site I just found.
So.
>>Let me know if it's any good or not. I've just skimmed through it so far.
Horrible, and riddled with false claims, why? A website that doubts the Bibles claims, who would of thought that would be on the internet? Go figure.
There are no biblical writings before 700 BCE.
ReplyDeleteThus, for 3,300 years the legends/ myths were passed down orally, constantly refied and tuned to the sudience that was being controlled.
Dan:
ReplyDeletePeople who use power to oppress those weaker than themselves use the bible to "justify" it. The oppressed have good reason to fear the bible, even as a collection of fairy tales, because it has become an instrument of oppression.
What is a Limp Storm Biscuit?
ReplyDeleteWell Dan... That would be Stormbringer. The reason I call him a limp storm biscuit is because he's always talking like a big, tough atheist slaying hero for Jesus, but when it comes down to it, all he does is whine. He is currently complaining that trolls are infesting his blog and threatening to kick them out of Pennsylvania.
I visited there the other day after reading his nonsense replies over at brother Ray's and noticed there were absolutely no replies to any of his posts until this past week. And that's going back to 2007.
I found that odd, since he claimed to be a seasoned battler of atheists. One would think that one or two would follow him back to his blog and at least make one comment. I felt bad for him and left a comment wondering about the dearth of atheists at his sight and now he's gone completely sideways over it.
He's quite the coward. Basically a limp noodle. There is this mediocre rock band called Limp Bisquit, so I did a half-hearted attempt at a play on words.
Because the storm he brings is quite limp and turns tale the moment it meets resistance. He hasn't been back to Ray's to answer anyone and he's fantasizing about trolls on his blog.
Hope that clears things up. BTW.. Is it okay if I bring my "B" game. My "A" game is out for a retrofit....
Dan
ReplyDeleteI googled "banning Grimms Fairy Tales" and guess what
Only fundies. I didn't know if I should laugh or cry.
Laugh at you or cry for you.
Pvb,
ReplyDelete>>People who use power to oppress those weaker than themselves use the bible to "justify" it. The oppressed have good reason to fear the bible, even as a collection of fairy tales, because it has become an instrument of oppression.
Funny, I don't feel oppressed when I read the Bible, I feel liberated. Maybe we are reading different books.
Dax,
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about?
I googled "banning Grimms Fairy Tales" and found about.com as the first two. Are you claiming they are a Christian organization?
Froggie,
ReplyDelete>>There are no biblical writings before 700 BCE.
Once again, your data is off or exaggerated. The New Testament antiquity of the Bible (with all its information about Jesus) was claimed to be written between 40 A.D. and 100 A.D. and there are 5,000+ known copies in Greek, 10,000 in Latin and 9,300 in other languages. They were written while many of the apostles were still alive and could be verified. (source)
Maybe you can point to your source.
Dr. Benway,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Limp Storm Biscuit explanation I thought I was missing out on something. I get the reference now. Maybe, I only brought my "s" (slow) game on that one. :7)
Knowing how honest you are I "googled
ReplyDeleteit again Guess what
You wroung
And yes I did that on porpiose
Slackin of with the "A " team

Over the few years I've lurked at this blog, one thing has become abundantly clear:
ReplyDeleteAtheists are not being debunked. Dan, however, is. Although he occasionally makes a good point, the vast majority of his opinion seems to be "La la la you can't challenge my faith!".
Personally, I wish he'd simply be more honest with his audience and himself, and accept the fact that he wont ever consider a religious idea that isn't already firmly entrenched in his own head. Accepting this, he'd stop trying to pretend he's debunking anything.
Dan:
ReplyDeleteHorrible, and riddled with false claims, why?
Care to list and more importantly, to show why the claims that you say are false, are false?
Have you read any of their source material?
A website that doubts the Bibles claims, who would of thought that would be on the internet? Go figure.
So what? There's pro-christian apologetic sites on the net too. Your point here was what, exactly?
I think Whateverman has you pegged when he said:

Dan,
ReplyDeleteYou reading comrehension is non existent today. Actually read what I wrote then read what you wrote.

Wem,

Yes and because you repeat it exhaustively it will eventually become true? Do you think that will be the same results with evolution also?
>> Although he occasionally makes a good point, the vast majority of his opinion seems to be "La la la you can't challenge my faith!".
Now you are completely and intellectually dishonest. First, you cannot claim that I do not listen to people. You have no proof of that. I do not moderate anything at all and every single word typed goes into my email. Second, how could I respond to emails if I am closing myself off to the words? Third, this is evidenced by this response right HERE to show you that I have indeed read your comments (not la,la,la) along with the entire history of responses that I have made in the past and fourth, you have never, ever, ever, once given me a reason to, or even to give me pause.
>>Personally, I wish he'd simply be more honest with his audience and himself, and accept the fact that he wont ever consider a religious idea that isn't already firmly entrenched in his own head.
Pot meet kettle. You are in good company here then.
Psst, this response HERE is yet more evidence of someone, you, being debunked even though it is not a proclaimed "atheist" this time.
Froggie,
ReplyDelete>>You reading comrehension is non existent today.
And you spelling is non existent today. :7) You're right though, I missed that one. D'oh!, I apologize.
You still haven't listed your source though. Were you there?

And you [sic] spelling is not above reproach.
Thank you for that modicum of decorumm and admission of your ignorance.
I'd like to know why stalkers like these irrational atheists are not in institutions.
ReplyDeleteYou got me...I was under the impression that we were allowed to post here.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should just stay on your own empty blog instead of running around to other people's blogs and complain about other people "stalking".
Dumbass.
Stormbringer:
ReplyDeleteNo one here is stalking you. We've all been posting on this blog for years. You've only been here a couple days.
I'd like to know why stalkers like these irrational atheists are not in institutions.
ReplyDeleteBob, you steaming bag of douche, why is it that 99% of your posts about others apply to you 150%?
I noticed that you only allow posts by "team members" on your ghost-town blog. Why didn't you just disable comments again? You know you don't have any team members. NOBODY likes you Bob. If your God were real, he wouldn't like you either, since you repeatedly break his commandments, by posting false comments under other people's names.
Now go run and hide on your ghost blog.
Dan,
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how the biggest destuction of bible is by other people with different bible versions.
Ant,
ReplyDelete>>It's funny how the biggest destuction of bible is by other people with different bible versions.
O'rly? So mankind is fallible? So you don't trust the various translations of God's Word but you trust the various translations and interpretation of data (opinions) that deals with science? Inconsistent much?
As far as the different translations, there is a sliding scale so I take all of them into account and not trust any 'one' thing that man has done. I stay close to literal and conservative as possible. The translations start from very conservative and literal translations like Young's Literal, Darby then to KJV then on up to the top of the more modern and liberal translations like NLT, NASB, and the most liberal New Jerusalem Bible (NJB). You might want to read a more conservative translation to understand God's Word, but that is just my advice.
or could it be that the people who want to burn if feel the people who read and follow it are guilty of inspeakable acts and theirfore wish it gone...like Mein Kamf?? That book has been used to justfy just about everykind of hatred. I can totally see whey it should be burned and its followers perseived as dangerous. Grimm on the other had, doesnt profess to be more than folklore.
